Meta’s Style Sketch: The Quiet AI Fashion App That Styles You From Your Own Closet
Here’s a sentence you don’t expect from a company that makes its money from ads: “No shopping required.”
That line comes from the App Store listing for Style Sketch, a new AI fashion app from Meta. There was no launch event and no press release. Social media consultant Matt Navarra spotted it, TechCrunch wrote it up on 29 October, and now the fashion internet is curious.
The idea is refreshingly simple. You already own clothes, so the app helps you actually wear them.
So how does it work?
First, it builds a digital version of your wardrobe. The easiest way is to connect Instagram, and the app pulls clothing out of photos you’ve already posted. FoneArena reports Facebook works too. If you’d rather keep your accounts separate, you can add pieces by hand by taking a photo, shooting a quick video or importing from your camera roll.
Then the styling starts. Style Sketch suggests outfits made only from what’s in that closet. You can pick one piece, like the blazer that’s been sitting there since Diwali last year, and ask for new ways to wear it. There’s a daily look that factors in the weather. And if you tell it your destination, trip length and plans, it gives you a day-by-day packing plan.
The feature everyone’s talking about is the try-on. According to the listing, outfits appear on “a realistic model matched to your body shape and skin tone.” That’s the part that’s fun, and also the part that should make you read the privacy policy before you start.
You can also browse trends and see how to recreate them with your own clothes, or send two looks to a friend and let them decide.
Can you use it in India?
Not yet, sadly. Right now Style Sketch is live on iOS and Android in just three countries: Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. Meta hasn’t said when, or whether, it will come to more markets. If you search the Play Store or App Store in India today, you won’t find it.
A few other details from the listing: it’s free, the iPhone version needs iOS 18 or later, and it’s rated 18+. It also links to Instagram’s terms and privacy policy, which tells you which part of Meta is behind it.
Our take: the Instagram link is the clever bit
Closet apps aren’t new. Plenty of them have come and gone, and most died for the same boring reason. Nobody wants to photograph 140 kurtas, shirts and pairs of jeans one by one.
Meta gets around that. As TechCrunch points out, its real advantage is that people have already been documenting their style on Instagram for years. Your closet basically builds itself.
We also like the timing. “Shop your closet” has been a stylist favourite for a while, and an app that pushes you back into your own wardrobe instead of a sale page feels right for now. It could mean lighter suitcases and fewer impulse buys.
But we have two doubts.
One is taste. The Times of India made a fair point: everything depends on how well the app recognises clothes and understands what you actually like. Good styling is proportion, texture and a bit of nerve. Algorithms usually play it safe.
The other is trust. Letting AI scan your photo history and build a model of your body is a lot to hand over to any company. And a “wear what you own” app from a business built on ads and shopping may not stay that pure forever.
What we’d do until it lands here
Steal the idea and do it yourself. Pick five pieces you haven’t worn in months. Style each one three ways, take a mirror selfie of every look and save them all in one album. Before your next trip, plan each day’s outfit before you pack anything. It’s low-tech, but it’s basically what Style Sketch does. And when the app does reach India, you’ll already know your own wardrobe better than the algorithm does.
FAQ
Is Meta’s Style Sketch app free?
Yes. The App Store listing says it’s free to use.
Can I download Style Sketch in India?
Not at the moment. It’s only available in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, and Meta hasn’t announced a wider rollout.
Do I have to connect Instagram?
No. Instagram just fills your closet automatically. You can add items manually with photos, short videos or camera-roll images.
