ChatGPT Images 2.6: How to Make GIFs in ChatGPT in India, and Is It Free?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.6 update landed on 4 November, and the headline feature is the one people actually wanted to play with: ChatGPT can now make animated GIFs. Type a prompt or upload a photo, and you get a looping animation you can slow down, speed up and edit frame by frame. Here is how to use ChatGPT Images 2.6 in India, what it costs, and where it still falls short.

What ChatGPT Images 2.6 actually adds

According to OpenAI’s own announcement, Images 2.6 is rolling out in ChatGPT, Codex and the API, across every subscription tier, on web, desktop and mobile. The company lists three big changes.

  • Native GIFs. You can animate a mascot, a character or a product shot directly inside the chat. The Verge, which tested the rollout, notes that before this update ChatGPT couldn’t produce a GIF in one step.
  • Speed. OpenAI says images now generate 50% faster than before.
  • Tighter editing. Characters, products and brand details are meant to stay consistent across editing rounds, which has been the most annoying weakness of AI image tools so far.

OpenAI also shared a usage number worth knowing: people now create around 4 billion images a week across ChatGPT, Codex and the API. The Verge points out that the figure was 3 billion a week in September. That is a big jump in about two months, and it explains why OpenAI keeps pouring effort into the image side of ChatGPT.

How to use ChatGPT Images 2.6 to make a GIF in India

There is no separate app and no waitlist. If your ChatGPT app is updated, you already have it. The steps are simple:

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web, the desktop app, or the Android/iOS app. Update the app from the Play Store or App Store first if the option doesn’t show.
  2. Ask for a GIF in plain words, for example: “Make a GIF of a chai cup with steam rising, warm morning light.”
  3. Or upload a photo, such as a product shot from your Instagram shop, and ask ChatGPT to animate it.
  4. Use the playback controls to change speed, and open the frame view to fix any frame that looks off.
  5. Download it or share it straight from the chat.

Our early advice: keep the motion simple. Steam, a blinking logo, a rotating product, falling confetti. Small loops look clean; complicated scenes with lots of moving people are where AI animation still wobbles.

Is it free? Pricing for Indian users

OpenAI says Images 2.6 is available on all ChatGPT tiers, which includes the free plan. What OpenAI has not spelt out in its post is exactly how many GIFs free users can make before hitting a limit, so expect the usual pattern: free accounts get a taste, paid plans get more room. We would not assume unlimited GIFs on the free tier.

If you already pay for ChatGPT in India, you don’t need to change anything. If you are thinking of upgrading just for this, try the free version for a few days first. And keep in mind that OpenAI has been reshuffling how limits work across its products; we covered the ChatGPT and Codex shared usage limit change recently, and heavy image use could eat into what you have.

Flare and Sunburst: the developer side

For developers, OpenAI has split the API model into two versions. GPT-Image-2.6 Flare is the fast one; OpenAI says it can produce an image in as little as six seconds with quality set to low, and it has better layout handling for posters and product images. GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst is the higher-quality option, aimed at consistency across edits at medium or high quality.

Two smaller API additions matter more than they sound. Image markup, which lets you point at the exact area you want changed, has moved from ChatGPT into the API. And SVG export means a design can go straight into a website or print file without being redrawn. A new “complexity” setting also controls how much planning the model does, so a quick colour change doesn’t need the same effort as a full scene.

For Indian startups building D2C storefronts, ad tools or meme apps, the Flare and Sunburst split is the practical bit: cheap and fast for drafts, slower and sharper for the final asset.

Who will get the most out of it

Three groups, mainly.

Small sellers and Instagram shops. A looping product GIF catches the eye in a feed far better than a flat photo. Until now that meant a designer or a fiddly app. Now it’s a sentence.

Creators and meme pages. Reaction GIFs, festive greetings, cricket celebration loops. Expect your WhatsApp groups to fill up with them before the wedding season is over.

Marketing teams. Consistent characters across edits is the feature they’ve been waiting for. A brand mascot that looks the same in ten versions is far more useful than ten beautiful but slightly different mascots.

The catches

GIF is an old format. Files get heavy quickly, colours are limited, and many platforms quietly convert GIFs into short videos anyway. For Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts you will still want a proper video tool.

There is also the usual question of copyright and likeness. Animating your own product photo is fine. Animating a celebrity photo or another brand’s logo is where you can get into trouble, and the fact that a tool lets you do something doesn’t make it safe to post.

And competition is moving just as fast. Google, Canva and smaller players such as Pika keep shipping image and video features; we looked at one of them in our piece on Pika H3 Flex for Indian creators. ChatGPT’s advantage is not that it is the best animation tool. It’s that it is the one already on hundreds of millions of phones.

Our take

Images 2.6 is not a revolution in image quality. It is something more useful: a fun feature put where people already are, plus a real speed boost. For most Indian users the GIF maker will be a toy for greetings and memes, and that’s fine. For small businesses, it quietly removes one more reason to hire a designer for quick social posts. Try it on a simple product loop this week. If it saves you even one round of back-and-forth with an editing app, it has earned its place.
